Past Lives, the new film by Celine Song, is fantastic.

For me, the story’s strength (and the directorial choices) lies in the fact that it deals with themes more than simple romantic love.

I would understand how someone looking for a more conventional love story with a guaranteed happy ending could be let down by this.

What I also appreciate in the film is its depiction of the concept that loving is also politics.

In the movie, memory and identity have a huge role in the story of Nora and Have Sung.

I don’t want to spoil anything for folks who haven’t watched it yet, but this is a great example of showing rather than telling why characters in a ‘romantic’ film don’t have to end up together.
